Reading

It is our aim that children will leave St Gilbert of Sempringham C of E Primary and Nursery School with appreciation of and passion for literature which will provide the foundations for future learning and enjoyment.

Children across all year groups, access a broad range of high-quality texts, both fictional and non-fictional. Story telling is given prominence within all classes and all children are encouraged to read widely for pleasure and enjoyment.

We believe that reading is the gateway for children that makes leaning possible. Here are at  St Gilbert of Sempringham C of E Primary and Nursery School everybody is a reader.

Summer Reading Challenge
Mrs Tubb held an assembly to explain to children about the Summer Reading Challenge. We are excited to find out how many books children will read over the summer holiday!
Reading for Pleasure Event
Our Reading Ambassadors helped to organise an after school event for parents, carers and family members to come and read for pleasure. They carefully chose a variety of books from our school library and set up areas on our field.
Thank you to everyone who attended.
Shared Reading
Shared reading with peers is important because it fosters collaboration, builds confidence, and enhances understanding of texts. It provides a supportive environment  for developing literacy skills, encouraging active engagement, and promoting a love for reading.
We love to share our books with children from different classes!
World Book Day 2025
This year on World Book Day - Thursday 6th March - we celebrated night time reading. All children (and staff!) came to school wearing their comfiest pyjamas, onesies and dressing gowns to enjoy a day full of activities.
A range of activities throughout the day were also based around the book Flooded by Mariajo Ilustrajo.

Virtual Authors
Our school is situated in a small village in rural Lincolnshire. Virtual authors are important because they enable us to connect with authors across the country, fostering engagement with literature and inspiring creativity.
Reading Ambassadors
Our Reading Ambassadors foster a love of reading within our school community. They encourage other students to read more and promote a positive reading culture.
Reading Spine
Our reading spine is a collection of 10 high-quality books for each year group. These are designed to build a strong foundation for literacy and a love of reading.
